I was not a sloth today. Yesterday, I was a sloth... three-toed, I believe. Maybe I should explain.
This weekend was "call" weekend for the Ellis household. For those who don't know, call weekend means that Claudine is "on call" for her OB/GYN practice. Any babies that get born between 7:00 AM Friday through 6:59 AM Monday are done by her. Any calls that come through the answering service during that period goes straight to her beeper. It means that there can be periods of very little sleep for her and some weekends where we don't see her at all. An added bonus for this particular call weekend was the added bonus of her having to be on call for Thursday as well.
Now I love my kids, but entertaining a 5 year old and a 20 month old for three days is not the easiest thing in the world to do. Part of my problem is my own doing. After I get them to sleep at night, I like to stay up late and screw around on the computer. I mean, isn't that what this culture is about? Who writes/reads these journals during the day? It is all done in the middle of the night. Oh.... except for reading while at work obviously. Anyway, after I get them to sleep, its my time. Of course, beer is also involved. So on a good night, I'm getting to bed at around 1:30 AM after 4 or 5 beers. And Bobby likes to wake up at around 6 AM. So I start out way behind the game. And I never catch up the rest of the day.
So yesterday, I laid around most of the day trying to entertain two kids while doing as little as possible. Lots of Elmo videos, Blues Clues videos, Pokemon videos. Didn't actually accomplish anything.
Now today, Claudine had about 6 hours where she wasn't needed at the hospital. So first she put Bobby to sleep for his nap. He ususally sleeps for about 2 hours in the afternoon. Then she took Jake food shopping (because we had nothing to eat in the house. Suddenly I had no kids to watch over. I jumped into action. First I had to vaccuum the pool. It has been about 10 days since I last vaccuumed or even added any chemicals, so it was pretty nasty on the bottom. I then wanted to mow the front yard, (because it had been about three weeks since I had done it last), but since Bobby's room is in the front of the house, I didn't want to run the risk of waking the sleeping giant. So I worked out instead. Hadn't had a chance to work out for awhile because it is somewhat difficult too do situps when a 30 pound kid jumps on your stomach everytime you do. Bobby woke up at just about the same time that Claudine and jake came home. They played in the sprinkler in the back while I mowed the yard in the front. As I said, I hadn't mowed in awhile so the grass was a bit high. I ended up doing a lot of the sections twice. It was really, really hot out, so having to do most of it twice has "learned me real good" that I need to cut the grass on a more regular basis.
Claudine got the craving to go to Fridays'. I thought we were taking a big risk seeing as she was on call. She was "pretty sure" her one patient wasn't going to delivery any time soon, so off we went. All in all, a busy day for us.
Now if only I could get around to actually doing my laundry...
