Sick Weekend

Where to start, where to start? This past weekend was going to be a very productive one. We had a number of things to do and we had a plan to get them all done. How did we do? Let me tell you.

Friday, I went to play golf in the afternoon. To put it plainly, I sucked. I'm more than willing to let golf go for awhile. I think I can put all the clubs away until our trip to England. Interestingly enough, I seem to have changed in my type of suckage a little bit. It used to be that if I was playing with someone or someones, I got all tense and would screw up. When I played by myself, I felt looser and freer allowing me to make some pretty good shots. Recently though, I have gotten better around others - perhaps because I'm afraid I'll embarrass myself. For some reason now when I play by myself, I don't concentrate as much and really make some sucky shots. Oh well. Maybe after a little break, I'll be a little more relaxed when I start playing again. Anyway, I picked up a pizza on the way home and we all pigged out and lounged around for a relaxing Friday night. After everyone went to sleep, I played a few hours of The Sims.

The rest of the weekend was full of puking and laundry. Oh sure, we did manage to go food shopping. But we HAD to. We had a house devoid of food. Our house food content rating was 0. No food. Nada. Zip. We were pretty efficent; we got out in under an hour and for under $200. Little did we know that it would be the last thing accomplished in the weekend. Everything went downhill from there. First it was Bobby. Very lethargic, cling and needy. A little puking and a lot of diarrhea on Saturday. By Sunday, he was feeling better and was pretty animated all day. A half hour before Jake was to go to bed, he said his stomach was really hurting him. He was laying on the couch and Claudine leaned over to put her ear to his tummy. At that moment he launched a huge stream right onto the side of Claudine's head. I was mortified and hysterical at the same time. It was really funny, but I kept it to myself because Jake was in some real pain as his stomach was really rebelling. Claudine cradled him until he was done and by that time they were both covered. It became my job to strip them down, clean up the couch and start the laundry. They went into the shower. Jake went right to sleep afterwards. Claudine and I commiserated for a bit. About an hour later, I heard Jake's door open up and I went out in the hall to meet him. He said "his room felt wet." Well you can guess what that meant. So I took him to his mom in bed while I stripped his bed down and started another load of laundry. Amazingly, he didn't actually wake up when he threw up. He only woke up later after it made his bed uncomfortable. He had no memory of doing it. I put him back in bed and he slept the rest of the night. Now what I didn't know was that after I went to sleep, Claudine went downstairs to sleep in her office because she was hot and restless. She does that a lot now that she is pregnant. But last night, she went down and proceeded to barf every hour and a half.

So when I woke this morning, I had a very healthy, rambunctious 2-year old who was shot out of a cannon after being out of it for 2 days. I had an almost healthy, but very weak 5 year old who just wanted more sleep... and to eat. And I had a very sick, very weak, pregnant wife who couldn't take any medicine and couldn't keep down any food. I left for work as soon as possible. No, seriously, I got Claudine and Jake settled in the bed upstairs. I got the Gatorade and the crackers out. I went downstairs and switched another load of laundry from the washer to the dryer. Then I got Bobby dressed and fed and took him to school.

I'm waiting for this stomach virus thingy to hit me. I've been waiting all day. I've been eating gingerly all day. I've had ginger tea, ginger beer, ginger snaps and ginger chicken. How the hell did "gingerly" become an averb anyway? Is "ginger" the root word there? Ha ha, ginger - root. I didn't even mean to do that one. Alas, again, I digress. Seriously, I ate very carefully. I had a plain bagel with no butter. I had a Peanut Butter Power Bar. That was about it. Tonight, I made a couple of grilled cheese sandwiches. Claudine ate most of one of them which was a good sign. Bobby and Jake ate some chicken nuggets and split a cucumber. I'm kind of torn. I don't want to get sick, but to not be able to eat anything on Thanksgiving would let me actually lose weight this weekend. How many people lose weight on the Thanksgiving weekend?
